"Thank You!"
In the car this week I noticed something strange, an odd behavior that I had no rational explaination for. It got me to wondering if I am the only person that has had this experience.
When changing lanes or merging onto the highway I found myself lifting my right hand in a wave. A bit of a "thank you" to the kind driver behind me for allowing a smooth transition.
The strange part ... I found myself not only waving but also saying the words "Thank you!" outloud. And not just saying them but saying them in a sweet sing-songy voice. WTF? That driver can't hear me. Why do I always do that? Am I alone here?

Nope, you're not alone. I generally do this for good karma!
No I don;t think so. I don't drive but as a passenger I am always talking to the other drivers, seldom a "thank you" tho...
I find myself singing that song "all I wanna do is to thank you, even though I don't know who you are. You let me change lanes while I was driving in my car...."
I've done the same thing a lot, but what makes what I did worse was that it was while I was driving a BIG truck (semi, tractor-trailer, 18-wheeler, that huge hunk of metal in the way, etc., etc.). For it is conceivable that someone could see you wave, or even mouth the words, "Thank you," while you are in a car. Of course, I have stepped out on the step a few times to make sure that "they" saw what I was doing, but that is different, I suppose. For I was not feeling very thankful at the time.
I usually give a nod and mouth the words thanks when people let me out at a road or let me merge. If Bill is driving then I give a wave.
@ Devilish - well I cant wait to cash in all that Karma and get me a new car!
@ Grace - oh yeah I do plenty of trash talking but thats mostly for my own benefit... it's not pretty
@ Lin - yes! That is the most obscure song - so funny that you mentioned it, I need to set up some speakers on my roof and get a go-go-gadget button on my dash so I can just press it everytime I get an easy merge. :)
@ Fish - lol - I dont think I would want to piss off anyone in a truck like that.
@ Jude - glad to know I'm not alone
I don't think you are at all unusual in this behavior. You are just doing what comes naturally to you as a courteous person. That the person can't actually hear you is inconsequential. Your spoken "thank you" is just part of the "thank you" wave.
You are not the only guilty of doing this. I am guilty of it as well. I think the "thank you" part is ingrained into our brains at a very young age.....(mind control,Ahhhhh!)
Hi The Bee!
Whenever I change lanes and other cars 'allow' me to do it (some drivers are so mean they tend to drive faster when they see someone about to change lanes), I do wave and say thank you... minus the sweet sing-songy voice though :)
Thanks for dropping by my blog!
Your action kinda reflects the courteous person that you are.
I do that all the time! My boys used to ask who I was talking to, now they so it as well!
